Welcome
to the Oak Ridge Juniors
The Oak Ridge Rowing Association
(ORRA) sponsors the Oak Ridge
Junior Rowing Program. It is not affiliated with the Oak Ridge School system.
Our primary focus is on sweep rowing. Rowing is an activity
that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. The girl's and boy's crews compete as one
team, but split into two crews. Then sub-divided into novice and varsity squads. No Experience
Needed. Novice rowers are just
learning how to row. After one year of rowing experience, athletes move
to the varsity crews.
The Oak Ridge Junior Rowing Program strives to instill and enhance the
athlete's self-esteem, self-discipline, team reliance and personal fitness.
To foster an environment where each rower can become the best he/she can
be, both on and off the water. The program teaches valuable skills of teamwork,
dedication, sportsmanship, athleticism, motivation, confidence, perseverance,
goal setting, time management, and the rewards of hard work.
Rowing is the ultimate team sport. It teaches commitment and respect
for others. Teamwork is essential to make a shell go. There are no super
stars in rowing. It takes everyone on the team to make a crew successful.
The skills learned in rowing will carry them through their lives in whatever
they pursue.
While acknowledging that competition is a component of any sport, it
is the ideal of this organization to never become so performance based as
to exclude any committed individual from participating. The Oak Ridge Juniors
recruit athletes from 16 different schools. A competitive and supportive
rowing experience can be a catalyst to a life long love of the sport. The
Oak Ridge Juniors compete successfully on the local, regional,
and national level.
Currently, Novice rowers practice three to four times per week for 90
minutes a day. As a Novice, the rower is taught basic rowing skills and
physical fitness. The Varsity crews practice five days a week. It is possible
for half of each practice to involve a land-based workout, and the other
half takes place on the water. Since practices on the water is limited,
parents should make every effort to get rowers to practice on time. Practice
will occur as scheduled rain or shine. Each coach will make the safety call
when weather changes on the water. Water training will be moved inside when
weather conditions become dangerous. Your athlete's health is more important
than any medal.
The rowing season is divided as follows:
Fall (August-October)
Winter (November- January)
Spring (February - May)
Summer (June-August)
The fall is a time to build fitness, team bonds, and to work on rowing
technique. The type of racing done in the fall is called a "Head Race";
this type of race is normally 3.5 miles and rowed at a slower pace. The
spring is our competitive season, with shorter, more intense head-to-head
events that are1500 to 2000 meters in length. The end of the season is marked
by regional and national competitions.
We invite you to join us in the exciting sport of rowing.
