Uniform Cost:
Varsity Uniform: $110.00 (Dry-wick Unisuit, Cool-max Shirt)
Novice Uniform: $15.00 (Tank top)& black shorts (non-baggy or bicycle style shorts are preferred.)

Travel: Travel cost will be divided up between each athlete involved with the event. The travel fees need to be paid on the Monday prior to the event at the Parent's weekly meeting. Your athlete will be only allowed to travel and compete with team if all fees or arrangements with the Junior Program Coordinator have been made.

Swim Test: ORRA policy states that a swim test should be taken once per year to demonstrate:

  1. Ability to tread water in sweatpants and sweatshirt.
  2. Proper use of PFD.
  3. Swim 200m in a comfortable fashion with out stopping while wearing swimming gear.

Water: Practices last about 90 minutes and though it may feel cool you must stay hydrated to stay in competitive form. All rowers should bring their own plastic water bottle to practice and in the boat with them, to prevent illnesses from being spread throughout the crew. A drinking fountain is available in the boathouse.

Weather: The weather is very unpredictable in East Tennessee. Practice will happen as scheduled rain or shine. Water training will be moved inside when lightning is present, temperatures under 32 degrees, high winds that can create large swells and dangerous conditions. Each coach will make the safety call when weather changes on the water. Your athletes health is more important than any medal.

Exercise Mat: The Boat house has limited padded stretching space please purchase a foam camping mat for your athlete to use for stretching and exercising.

Clothing: Rowing shorts or Unisuits are preferred. However, old clothes and running shoes can be worn to practice. Bicycle style shorts are preferred, baggy shorts tend to get caught in the moving parts of the boat. It would be a smart idea to carry warm ups and a change of clothes and a towel in a gym bag due, you will get wet. Unisuits or crew t-shirts and black shorts are required for race days.

Academics: I encourage each rower to excel at their academics as well on the water. However, once you and your athlete have committed to the crew there are many people that depend on them being there at each practice. I ask that you consult me prior to suspending your athlete from the team. Many times a small act of removing your athlete from the crew has larger and disastrous effect on an entire crew. There are many things such as study hall and tutoring that can be arranged to get the athlete back on track and continue to row at the same time. ORRA's policy is to try to minimize missed school time for rowing events. After all they are students athletes, Students 1st and Athletes 2nd.

Facilities: The boathouse has restrooms to change in, but no showers or lockers. Do not bring valuables into boathouse; leave them in your car or at home. ORRA is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Parents: The ORRA Jr.'s Parents Organization formed in 1998 to provide essential support from parents for the success of the junior programs at regattas. On the Monday prior to ANY regatta there will be a parents meeting at the boathouse at 6:30 pm. We will cover details of departure and return times, as well as any other pertinent information that parents need to be aware of regarding your children in the Junior Program. Assignment of drivers and chaperones will be done at this time plus any volunteer that will be needed will be addressed. Your talents are unknown to the coaches unless you volunteer to help, ask coaches or the Junior Program Coordinator if your knowledge and expertise can be used to help the program.
