The Oak Ridge Rowing Association was founded in 1978 with a mission to promote the sport of rowing in Oak Ridge and East Tennessee. Now in it's 39th year of service, the ORRA is home to the Atomic Juniors and Masters Rowing Teams, offers a wide array of Learn-To-Row classes, and is host to several Championship Rowing Regattas and Spring Training Camps.
[April 29, 2017] Significant rainfall swept through the Southeast US on Friday, April 21 through Sunday, April 23, quickly dumping more than six inches of rain across the region. On April 25, 2017, the Tennessee Valley Authority opened all three spillways at Norris Dam, 30 miles above the Melton Hill Lake venue. In less than eight hours, water conditions degraded from a dead-calm normal elevation pool to a raging flow of more than 12,000 cubic feet per second (ft3/s). That flow continued to climb, peaking at more than 20,000 ft3/s, or about 10 million gallons per minute. These historic flow rates have never been seen in the 39-year history of rowing on this venue. Violent currents carried rolling and twisting debris into the race course, snapping cross cables and lane lines, tearing pilings from the riverbed, and causing extensive damage to the start bridge.
The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming. Volunteer crews have worked tirelessly to save as much material as possible. Our on-water crews are winning the battle against very high current and trees as large as 60' long, broken and twisted in remnants of the lane lines. Salvage operations continue through Sunday, April 30, with an assessment of recovered material by May 1. Plans to return to operation are hampered by TVA projections of continued high flow rates.
ORRA needs your help! We continue to actively seek volunteers to assist with the monumental clean up and near-term course reinstallation. In addition, the financial impact to our small non-profit organization cannot be overstated. We are managing volunteer efforts through SignUp Genius, and financial contributions through direct receipt of cash, check or credit card donations, and an online GoFundMe account. Every hour counts. Every dollar counts. Thank you in advance!
